Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

What is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)?
This is a condition characterized by an excess of fat in the cells of the liver. The liver is the largest organ in the body and plays a role in processing everything that you eat, drink, breathe, and absorb through your skin. When fat makes up at least 10 percent of the liver it is called “fatty liver.” NAFLD can range from fatty liver to the more serious nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, and liver failure. Changes in the liver from nonalcoholic fatty liver are similar to those that result from drinking too much alcohol. It requires attention to avoid progression of liver disease.

Those who are considered to be overweight or obese with a BMI of 25 or higher may be at risk for NAFL.

Dumping Syndrome

What is Dumping Syndrome?

Dumping syndrome is a collection of gastrointestinal and other symptoms that occur after a person eats. Food and juices moving in a quick and unregulated manner from your stomach into the intestines causes dumping syndrome. The majority of individuals that experience dumping symptoms have had a surgical procedure that removes part of the stomach or bypasses it such as a gastrectomy (removal of the stomach) or gastric bypass Roux-en-Y surgery (which reroutes the digestive system so the stomach is smaller).

Pruritus Ani

Pruritis ani is defined as a chronic itching of the skin around the anus.  There are many causes of the disorder, but the most common type can be managed without medication.  The key to managing the problem is to minimize mechanical trauma to the area.  Other recommendations include:

1. As mentioned above, reduce mechanical trauma to the area, as this can aggravate the skin and cause more itching, prolonging the problem.  Do not scratch or rub the anal area.

Pulmonary reflux disease is associated with aspiration pneumonia, asthma and chronic cough lasting more than 3 months in duration. It is a disorder pertaining to the airway and lungs.
